Four people together outdoors at camp

Kay Boudreaux Bird

Founder | Board Chairman | Proud Cajun Queen

A proud Cajun Queen who loves LSU and bleeds purple and gold, Kay Boudreaux Bird may have called Montana home for more than 25 years, but her Louisiana roots still run deep.

Not long after moving to Montana, Kay fell in love with hunting and the outdoors. Archery hunting is by far her favorite. For her, there is nothing quite like the challenge and exhilaration of calling in an elk and hearing that bugle answer back through the mountains. In fact, she’ll tell you her favorite sound in the world is two elk bugling back and forth.

Kay has been married for six years to Dave Bird, a retired U.S. Navy SEAL, and together they founded Timber and Valor with a shared desire to create something meaningful for the veteran community.

Kay is earning her B.A. in Psychology and plans to pursue her Master of Social Work (MSW) in 2027, with a focus on veteran mental health and trauma. She is also currently completing the PsychArmor Veteran Ready Program, further expanding her knowledge and understanding of how to better serve veterans and their families.

As Founder of Timber and Valor, Kay has a hand in just about everything—from building partnerships and planning Hunt Camps to supporting veterans and their families and shaping the long-term vision of the Foundation.

Kay believes there is something naturally healing about the mountains beneath Montana’s Big Sky. Out there, away from the noise and the four walls, barriers have a way of coming down. Conversations happen naturally. Bonds are built. Sometimes healing doesn’t begin sitting across from someone in an office—it begins standing beside someone who understands, sharing the quiet of the mountains, the anticipation of the hunt, or the warmth of a campfire.

“I firmly believe healing begins outside the four walls, shoulder to shoulder, in the field, with your fellow brethren.”
– Kay Boudreaux Bird

Dave Bird

Co-Founder | Navy SEAL Veteran | Veteran Mentor | Montana Outdoorsman

For Dave Bird, service didn’t end when the uniform came off. It found a new mission.

A native Montanan, Dave was raised by a game warden father and a schoolteacher mother, so a love and respect for the outdoors were instilled in him early. Hunting, fishing, wildlife, and the mountains weren’t hobbies. They were simply part of growing up in Montana.

Dave spent 26 years in the U.S. Navy, including 21 years in Special Operations and 15 years as a Navy SEAL. Retirement may have meant hanging up the uniform, but it didn’t mean Dave was done serving. Today, he works at the VA, where he continues to serve by helping fellow veterans.

Funny enough, one of the biggest turns in Dave’s story started with something simple: a fellow veteran gave him a bow.

After years of little interest in hunting, that bow got him back into the mountains. Before long, he was hooked again. The challenge of the hunt, the sounds of wildlife, the quiet of the mountains, the laughter, and, most importantly, the camaraderie reminded Dave of something he hadn’t realized he’d missed.

And somewhere in there, the idea behind Timber and Valor began to take shape.

Dave knows firsthand that transitioning out of the military can mean leaving behind more than a uniform. You can also lose the team, the shared mission, the trash talk, the stories, and the camaraderie that doesn’t need much explaining.

That’s what Dave wants to help veterans find again.

Give him a bow, a mountain, a campfire, and a bunch of veterans giving each other hell, and Dave is in his element.

“Spending anytime out in nature is never a waste of time”
– Bob Bird

Phil Johnston

JAG | Veteran Mentor | Fun Sponge

Phil Johnston

Phil Johnston is a seventh-generation Montanan who recently returned home to Missoula after 11 years as a Judge Advocate (JAG) in the United States Navy. He grew up fishing and hunting and finds the outdoors a refuge.

His journey has taken him around the world. At 18, he left Montana for what he thought would be a single gap year working with a nonprofit. Instead, that experience became a decade of living and working throughout Southeast Asia, partnering with marginalized and vulnerable communities.

After becoming a father, Phil returned to school with renewed purpose and eventually pursued a legal career. After law school, he joined the Navy, where he spent more than a decade advising commanders on complex legal and operational matters. He remains active in the Navy Reserve.

Today, Phil is a personal injury attorney in Missoula and serves as contracted general counsel for a startup Department of Defense contractor. He and his wife have been married for 23 years and are the proud parents of two daughters, ages 17 and 20.

Anne Greaney

Board Secretary | Volunteer Extraordinaire | Steinholding Champion & All-Around Badass Boss

Anne Greaney

Don’t let Anne’s kind heart and positive outlook fool you. She’s also a Steinholding champion and a seriously badass woman.

Anne Greaney serves as Board Secretary for Timber and Valor, but around here, that title only begins to capture what she brings to the team. Loyal, hardworking, and always willing to jump in wherever she’s needed, Anne is the kind of person every organization hopes to have in its corner. She approaches life with positivity, leads with kindness, and has a way of making those around her feel supported and appreciated. Simply put, she’s a treasure to our team.

Anne’s connection to the military runs deep. As the daughter of a career Army Lt. Colonel, she grew up as an Army brat with firsthand understanding of military life and the sacrifices made by service members and their families. That connection continued when her husband joined the U.S. Army, and today the family’s tradition of service lives on through two of her sons, who also served in the military.

A proud mother of four and grandmother of six, Anne holds family dear, and that same fierce loyalty extends to the veterans and families Timber and Valor serves.

Whether she’s handling her responsibilities as Board Secretary, volunteering at Hunt Camp, lending a hand behind the scenes, or simply making sure everyone around her is taken care of, Anne shows up with her whole heart.

We’re incredibly lucky to have her as part of the Timber and Valor family.

Mike Birdett

Board Treasurer | Veteran Mentor | A two-time World Champion in competitive track cycling.

Mike Birditt

Apparently, Retirement Is Just a Suggestion!

Mike Birdett grew up all over the world, thanks to his father, who made a career in the United States Navy and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 3 (CWO3). While his dad was busy serving his country, Mike was collecting passport stamps and developing a taste for adventure that never wore off.

After earning his bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Mike entered the Riverside Police Academy in California at 23. Shortly thereafter, he became a deputy with the Imperial County Sheriff's Office. Around age 26, he joined the San Diego Police Department, where he built a successful law enforcement career before retiring as a Police Officer II.

But apparently, a career in law enforcement wasn't exciting enough for Mike!

After retiring, he dabbled in a few business ventures before, at the ripe young age of 40, deciding that racing bicycles sounded like a good idea. And Mike doesn't exactly do anything halfway! He went on to become a multiple-time state champion, five-time national champion, and two-time world champion in track cycling, specializing in criterium racing. Because, you know, normal hobbies are just too boring!

An avid outdoorsman and passionate archery hunter, Mike has enjoyed numerous successful harvests over the years. Whether he's chasing a championship or elk through the Montana mountains, Mike has never shied away from a challenge.

Five years ago, Mike and his wife, Jayne, traded the hustle and bustle for the beautiful mountains of Montana, where they've been enjoying retirement—or at least their version of it! Mike is also a proud father of one daughter and a grandfather of one grandson, adding two more important titles to his already impressive résumé.

Today, Mike and Jayne are dedicated members of the Timber and Valor family, generously giving their time, energy, and hearts to help bring Kay's vision to life.

Mike may have retired from law enforcement and competitive cycling, but slowing down? Yeah, we're still waiting for that to happen!

Danny Kurk

Hunt Operations & Field Logistics | The Mountain GOAT

When it comes to hunting, Danny Kurk doesn't believe in calling it quits. A sixth-generation Montanan from the Bozeman area, Danny moved to Townsend in 2015. An avid outdoorsman through and through, Danny is happiest wherever adventure takes him, whether he's on the water in his boat, ice fishing on Montana's frozen lakes, or deep in the mountains chasing his next hunt.

If there's one way to describe Danny, it's as the GOAT of the mountains! He's always up for a challenge, thrives in rugged terrain, and knows Montana's backcountry like the back of his hand. We're fairly certain the man is part mountain goat.

And yes, we have to address the elephant in the room. Danny is a proud Cheesehead and a die-hard Green Bay Packers fan. We try not to hold that against him!

As part of Timber and Valor's Hunt Operations and Field Logistics team, Danny brings a lifetime of outdoor experience, extensive hunting knowledge, and the kind of grit that makes him an invaluable asset in the field. Whether the hunt takes him a few miles or deep into the backcountry, Danny is committed to seeing it through.

One thing's for certain—Danny won't quit on you, even when you're ready to quit on yourself!

Beyond his love for the mountains, Danny has a genuine heart for veterans and a passion for connecting those who have served with the outdoors. He understands that the greatest rewards aren't always measured by a successful harvest, but by the friendships, laughter, and connections made along the way.

We're honored to have Danny as part of the Timber and Valor family. He embodies the camaraderie, commitment, and unwavering support that define our mission—standing shoulder to shoulder with our veterans, one adventure at a time.

Jayne Geisler

From Buckingham Palace to Big Sky Country | Timber and Valor Foundation

From royal garden parties at Buckingham Palace to the rugged mountains of Montana, Jayne Geisler's life has been anything but ordinary!

Born and raised primarily in the United Kingdom, Jayne grew up in a proud military family. Her father was a decorated Royal Air Force helicopter pilot whose remarkable career took the family around the world. From 1964 to 1967, they lived in Singapore while he flew search-and-rescue missions and served in Borneo during the Indonesian Confrontation.

Following their return to England, her father was promoted to Squadron Leader with the prestigious Queen's Flight. His duties included flying members of the British Royal Family, including Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, Princess Anne, and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, who happened to be his favorite passenger! He also helped teach the future King Charles III to fly helicopters and had the extraordinary honor of piloting Queen Elizabeth II into Belfast during her Silver Jubilee celebrations. After retiring from the Queen's Flight, he continued his aviation career flying for the Sultan of Oman.

What was life like growing up as the daughter of a royal pilot? Jayne attended garden parties at Buckingham Palace and events at Royal Ascot. She even had to learn to curtsy properly! Not exactly an average childhood!

In 1977, Jayne traded life across the pond for a new adventure in the United States. She lived in California, Connecticut, and Arizona before returning to California. She proudly became an American citizen in 1989 and has voted in every election since.

Now, let's talk about how she met her husband, Michael Birditt.

Their love story began on two wheels, though Jayne will be the first to say it was NOT love at first sight! Michael was riding in a fast-paced cycling peloton and scared the living daylights out of her! Apparently, his approach to romance mirrored his approach to cycling: full speed ahead! Fortunately, destiny had other plans, and the two married in 2017.

Michael introduced Jayne to Montana and the beauty of the great outdoors, and she quickly fell in love with Big Sky Country. Today, Jayne divides her time between California, where she works as a Realtor, and Montana, where she'd happily live full-time if she could just convince her daughter and family to move north!

A devoted wife, mother, and proud Nana, Jayne treasures her daughter and her adorable grandson. Family is at the heart of everything she does. But perhaps the most meaningful part of Jayne's story is what led her to Timber and Valor Foundation.

Growing up in a military household, Jayne understands the sacrifices military families make, the long separations, the uncertainty, and the pride that comes with loving someone who serves. Her father's extraordinary military career instilled in her a deep respect for service, sacrifice, and the families who stand behind our nation's heroes.

Jayne brings that understanding, compassion, and unwavering pride in the military to Timber and Valor. She believes deeply in our mission to help veterans reconnect with purpose, build lasting relationships, and strengthen their families through the healing power of the outdoors.Although her journey has taken her from royal palaces to Montana hunting camps, Jayne believes there's a greater purpose behind it all.

"I don't believe I'm here by accident. I truly believe God led me to Timber and Valor to support our veterans and their families."

From learning to curtsy for royalty to embracing life in Montana, Jayne brings grace, humor, heart, and a lifetime of appreciation for military service to the Timber and Valor family.

And around here, we think she's right where she's meant to be.
